The Maritime Museum of BC is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the exhibit titled The Lost Fleet January to March, 2019. This exhibit will be on loan from the Vancouver Maritime Museum. The exhibit will also feature a new art show titled “A Series for Contemplation” from local Japanese-Canadian artist, Marlene Howell. Join the Maritime Museum of BC for a short commemorative presentation on the sinking of the SS Princess Sophia, followed by the unveiling of a new plaque, which will be permanently installed in the Parade of Ships memorial wall in Victoria’s Inner Harbour. The Victoria-based coastal liner struck Vanderbilt Reef, in Alaska’s Lynn Canal, on October 23, 1918 and sank on October 25,1918. Everyone on board perished including an estimated 367 passengers and crew. The sinking of the SS Princess Sophia remains the largest marine tragedy in the Pacific Northwest. Join us on a two day wreck diving adventure to Vancouver Island. We will take the ferry to Sidney, meet Erin the boat captain and are off to a great start diving the G.B. Church, HMCS MacKenzie, Boeing 737, Rivtow Lion, HMCS Saskatchewan, and HMCS Cape Breton over a couple of days! We will boat all the way through the Gulf Islands, stay overnight in Nanaimo. Sunday we will do the reverse, just dive the wrecks around Nanaimo.
