Browsing: St Lawrence River

For centuries, the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes have shaped the story of Canada. The Descending team  of Scott Wilson and Andre Dupuis takes a trip through history and visits the world’s best collection of freshwater shipwrecks to discover what makes this water so great.

Scuba divers love to explore shipwrecks. But they must do it without touching the wreck. Wooden hulls can be can be easily damaged after lying at the bottom of the St. Lawrence River. “Wood underwater for 200 years is more like sponge,” says Tom Scott, a scuba diver and a member of a volunteer organization called Save Ontario  Shipwrecks.

This weekend is looking sunny with temperatures in the low-to-mid 20’s in the Brockville and Kingston area. It is getting busier on the river after a bit of a slower start than usual, but as we head towards August boats are filling up fast. If you are looking for some diving call the charters to see who has spaces. There are still spots for one or two last-minute divers on a lot of the boats.
