In scuba diving, there are many things to be grateful for, such as the trip to that must-see shipwreck, a newly discovered shipwreck, or the underwater world of corals and colourful reef fish. Also, there is diving with a group every week and adding another “log entry.” We also reflect on those divers who have lost their lives in pursuing their passion for their sport. As Christmas and a new year approach I am grateful for being asked to be the managing editor of The Scuba News Canada. Like the original Scuba News, the Canadian and other versions were created…

I would like all of our readers to join me in congratulating Kathryn, Managing Editor of The Scuba News New Zealand, who should have by now (not sure of the time difference with NZ), married her “man of the sea” Nicholas Curzon. I have known Kathryn (and later Nick) as client, friend and now colleague for around 3 years and I could not be happier for them now they have finally tied the knot. Throughout the last 3 years it has been a pleasure to work with Kathryn and Nick on their charity initiative, Friends for Sharks, on helping with cultivating…

You may have noticed some subtle changes over the last few months at The Scuba News. This is all part of what we are now proud to fully announce – The launch of several dedicated “Regional Editions” of The Scuba News which has now been several months in the planning. Operating as…

It is celebration time this week as The Scuba News reaches an important milestone. This week we are officially 3 YEARS OLD! It’s Our Birthday!! What started as a small side-project, many sleepless nights ago, has now become so much more than we ever anticipated it would be and we have you to thank. Our Contributors, our Advertisers and of course you, our readers. Without your continued support, the things we have achieved would never have been possible. It is with this in mind that I send huge, heartfelt thanks to you all of you. We have some fantastic plans…

It may have been my first time at the Birmingham Dive Show Dive 2015 but I can guarantee that it will not be my last. Dive Shows are to a certain degree, a social event as much as a business event and whilst everyone is there promoting or selling something, it is a great opportunity to meet up with those divers from around the world you you only tend to meet at dive shows and put faces to names of those who only exist in the virtual world of the Internet. This was especially true for me. Operating The Scuba…

This year I will finally be attending The Birmingham Dive Show 2015 on behalf of The Scuba News. I have wanted to attend the show for the last couple of years but unfortunately events conspired to render this impossible but I will finally be there this year and I can’t wait 🙂 This is going to be a great opportunity for me to meet a lot of our writers and contributors from the UK who have only existed in a “Virtual” world for me so far, so I am particularly looking forward be able to put faces to names and…

I am not sure if this is something that has been happening for a long time and I have not paid attention to it, or if it is something that has risen to prominence in the last few months. The new trend in diving seems to revolve around making yourself famous. It seems to be every week (and sometimes multiple times each week) that we are publishing news articles about new world records being set, or people who want to break records and I am not sure that this is actually a good thing. On the one hand it is…

I have been working with 3 Turtles Diving Center in Safaga for around 8 or 9 months now and during that time the owners, Tam Tam and Adham have moved beyond clients and into good friends. Yesterday I finally got the opportunity dive with them at their facility in Safaga (something I have been intending to do since we first met). Safaga is about a 1 hour drive from Hurghada, so with equipment prepared I made an early start and began my road trip. Road trips are supposed to be exciting, but early in the morning there is not really…

They say that time flies when you are having fun and I can safely say that this statement is true for us here at The Scuba News. It only seems like yesterday that we had an idea for a small side project that would help divers keep up with what is going on in the world of scuba and provide a place to find some of the best scuba travel deals and now we are celebrating our 2nd Birthday. During this time, The Scuba News went from that little “side project” and evolved into something so much more, something that absorbed…

As most of you know, I currently live in Egypt and despite there being so much diving to do, with so many different centers (some owned by clients, some owned by friends), I am always on the look out for somewhere new to try. Today I was given exactly that opportunity and was invited to dive in Makadi Bay, which is a little bit further south than Hurghada where I live. It would be an opportunity to test out a new house reef, which are perfect when I don’t have the time to take an entire day off work to go…

Last week I found myself in the market for some new scuba diving equipment. Well to be honest, my wife was in the market for some scuba diving equipment for me as it was my birthday (thank you to all those who sent messages and tweeted! 😉 ) Items on my list were a new shorty, some fins and a new SPG to replace a leaky one. The SPG is obviously an easy one and not a difficult decision to make when choosing. The suit and the fins are clearly something a little bit different. At Aqua Lung I was able to…

As you may know, here at The Scuba News we are quite active on Instagram. This means that I spend a lot of time admiring other peoples scuba diving photos. I like all photos that relate to diving. Whether they are taken underwater, on the boat on the way to a dive site or even photos of kit drying in someones kitchen. If it involves diving then I’m in! What I do see, with frightening regularity however, is people taking the idea of interacting with the wildlife a little bit too far. I am not going to share any photos of…

I have been considering changing my trusty Sunnto Stinger for a while now but can’t decide which one to get. The D9 seems to be the one that the PADI professionals choose but to be honest, if you are not going to be diving Trimix, the D9 seems like a bit of “Overkill” with features you are never going to use (and a higher price tag). Have any of our readers tried out both? Which one do you recommend? I would love to hear your thoughts.

I had never been to a dry dock before. My involvement with boats has been pretty much restricted to being on them before I jump in the water to go diving but this weekend I had a meeting and for timing reasons it had to take placed at the dry dock in Safaga (Egypt). It is quite a daunting place really seeing all of the boats in very unnatural surroundings, so being armed with an iPhone I thought I would share some pictures for those of you who,  like me  had never been to a dry dock before!

Well 2014 is now well underway and we are quite curious how many of you are still sticking to those resolutions you made on News Years Eve. Has your gym membership started to be  a waste of money yet? Have you eaten the cake that you promised you wouldn’t? Had the beer you said you would abstain from? Resolutions never really become the life changing events that we promise ourselves they will be. We think that the best plan to be making in January is planning your dive schedule for the year. Put together your diving “bucket list” and then…

I didn’t want to dive yesterday really. Well that is not strictly true. I did want to dive but I had been suffering with a bit of head cold since Friday so I was not exactly feeling on top form. Added to which, the weather at the moment is not what you would really expect for Egypt (and certainly not why I moved here!). It has been quite cold for a few days so when the alarm went off yesterday morning and I popped my head out from the duvet to feel the cold, followed by the stuffy nose, the…

Is it really snowing in Egypt? Well I have been asked this question a lot over the last 24 hours and whilst it is not actually snowing in Hurghada (where I am), I can confirm that it is snowing in a few different places around Egypt including: Cairo, Alexandria and Sinai. In Hurghada it is pretty cold by Egypt standards but so far the snow has not arrived. I am constantly looking to the skies however as rain here tends to cause some major problems and we are experiencing a bit of black cloud. Good news though is at least…

Well I am just back from a nice day diving on the house reef at Makadi Bay in the glorious Red Sea. I have not been in the water for a few weeks so it was nice to be getting wet again. The weather actually seemed a bit bleak this morning with a cold wind from the north so I was expecting it to be a bit cold with poor visibility but I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised on both counts. 26 degrees in the water and surprisingly good viz. This was quite a shallow dive really…

As you probably know if you read The Scuba News regularly, that I am always looking for “Name and Shame” opportunities in an attempt to raise awareness about marine life cruelty, quite often at the hands of “so-called” scuba professionals. Well this photo was brought to my attention by a fellow Instagram user (steinriede_ph2otography) and I certainly think the chap posting this picture (fawaz_alsaqer), or idiot as I prefer to call him, is certainly worthy of the “Name and Shame” treatment. I still find it amazing that over 1000 people can “like” this picture. What is there to like? It…

Yesterday I got to spend a day on what is undoubtedly my favourite boat on the Red Sea at the moment, Deep Dark. The day was a little bit different as it brought together 3 members of my family and introduced my younger brother to the world of scuba diving (which he did love by the way). It also allowed me to dive with my father which is not a regular, every day occurrence as he is an instructor at the opposite end of the spectrum to my kind of diving. His courses usually involve him going to 100m using…

Dive Rite was established in 1984 by Lamar Hires and Mark Leonard; two underwater cave explorers and cave diving instructors from North Florida. In the 1970′s and early 80′s, technical diving gear was virtually non-existent. Most cave divers made their own gear or adapted ocean diving gear to fit the cave environment. Lamar and Mark changed that and began the first technical dive gear company in existence. Pioneering products such as the Classic wing and the canister light, they introduced to the scuba industry the very first products designed for underwater exploration.
