The Caribbean island of Bonaire has long been known as one of the world’s most accessible dive destinations. Now one of its best-known operators has been recognised for something different: developing the next generation of dive professionals.
Buddy Dive Resort has been honoured with the Platinum Professional Development Excellence Award from PADI, a recognition given to dive centres that demonstrate exceptional commitment to training professional-level divers and instructors.
The award is part of a programme run by the global training organisation to highlight instructor development centres that play a key role in expanding the dive industry. The Bonaire resort achieved the distinction after delivering more than 100 professional certifications during the past year.
These included instructor-level training such as the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) programme as well as a wide range of speciality instructor certifications. Programmes like these are typically delivered through PADI Instructor Development Courses, which prepare experienced divers to move into teaching and professional roles within the industry.
Located along Bonaire’s famous western shoreline, Buddy Dive Resort has long been associated with shore diving and diver-focused accommodation. The resort operates its own PADI Five-Star Instructor Development Centre, offering courses that take divers from entry-level training through to instructor certification and professional career development.
Professional training has become an increasingly important part of the global dive industry. Instructor development centres not only train new dive professionals but also help maintain safety standards, teaching quality, and environmental awareness across the sport.
Recognition through the Professional Development Excellence Award highlights centres that consistently produce large numbers of professional-level certifications while maintaining strong instructional standards.
For Bonaire, a destination widely regarded as one of the Caribbean’s premier shore-diving locations, the recognition reinforces the island’s reputation as both a recreational diving hotspot and a place where many divers begin their professional careers.
