Why Divers Shouldn’t Miss the Boston Sea Rovers Weekend

One of Diving’s Most Respected Gatherings Returns This Weekend

    Boston Sea Rovers
Boston Sea Rovers runs three rooms of daytime programs. In this photo, one of our speakers describes how to take better underwater video.

For generations of divers in North America, the annual Boston Sea Rovers International Ocean Clinic has marked the unofficial start of the dive season. This weekend the long-running event returns for its 72nd edition, bringing together explorers, filmmakers, scientists, instructors, and everyday divers for two days of inspiration and learning.

Held on March 14 and 15 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Boston North Shore in Danvers, Massachusetts, the event has grown from a small educational gathering into a globally respected dive symposium that attracts speakers and exhibitors from around the world. The clinic is organised by the non-profit Boston Sea Rovers, a volunteer organisation dedicated to increasing knowledge and appreciation of the underwater world.

The result is a weekend that blends exploration, storytelling, education, and community, and one that many divers treat as an annual pilgrimage.

    A Weekend Packed With Inspiration

One of the biggest draws of the Sea Rovers clinic is its extensive seminar programme, with more than forty presentations scheduled across the weekend. These talks feature some of the most knowledgeable voices in diving and ocean exploration, covering everything from underwater photography and expedition diving to marine science and conservation.

The presenters are carefully selected experts in their fields, and the emphasis is always on high-quality imagery, compelling storytelling, and real experience from the underwater world.

For divers looking to start the season motivated, it is hard to beat a full day surrounded by people who have explored remote wrecks, documented marine life, and pushed the boundaries of what is possible underwater.

    The Saturday Night Film Festival

Another highlight is the Saturday Evening Film Festival, widely regarded as one of the most enjoyable parts of the weekend.

The festival showcases some of the best underwater filmmaking and exploration storytelling, bringing audiences face-to-face with expeditions and ocean adventures from around the globe.

For many attendees, it is a rare chance to watch world-class underwater films alongside the people who actually made them, followed by informal conversations and networking afterwards.

    A Dive Industry Marketplace

Beyond the presentations, the expanded exhibit hall offers two full days where divers can explore gear, destinations, and travel opportunities from across the diving industry. Entry to the exhibit floor is free, making it an easy way for visitors to connect with manufacturers, dive operators, training agencies, and tourism boards all in one place.

Typical exhibitors range from equipment manufacturers and dive training organisations to liveaboard operators and exotic dive destinations.

For divers planning their next adventure, it can feel like a global dive travel fair condensed into a single ballroom.

    Hands-On Workshops and Skill Building

The clinic is not just about watching and listening.

Specialised workshops allow divers to gain practical knowledge from experienced instructors. Sessions can include topics such as underwater photography editing, regulator service, rebreather introductions, and visual tank inspections. These smaller sessions provide the kind of direct interaction that is difficult to find elsewhere.

For many divers, it is an opportunity to pick up a new skill before the dive season begins.

    Something for the Whole Family

While the clinic is built around the diving community, it has always been designed to be accessible to a wider audience.

The event regularly attracts not only experienced divers but also families, ocean enthusiasts, and newcomers curious about the underwater world. Activities such as Discover Scuba sessions in the on-site pool and dedicated Sunday children’s programmes help introduce new audiences to diving and ocean exploration.

It is one of the reasons the Sea Rovers clinic has remained popular for decades.

A New Shipwreck Exhibit Adds to the Experience

This year’s event also builds on the excitement surrounding the new shipwreck exhibit unveiled by the organisation earlier this year.

As previously reported by The Scuba News, the display highlights historic wreck exploration and underwater heritage, offering visitors another way to connect with the stories that lie beneath the surface.

Combined with the seminars, films, and exhibits, it adds another layer of discovery for attendees exploring the event for the first time.

A Tradition That Continues to Inspire Divers

Since its origins in the 1950s, the Boston Sea Rovers gathering has remained rooted in its original mission: educating people about the ocean and the adventure of diving.

More than seventy years later, the formula still works.

Whether you come for the films, the speakers, the travel inspiration, or simply the chance to reconnect with the diving community after winter, the Boston Sea Rovers weekend remains one of the most respected events in the North American dive calendar.

And if you are already attending, chances are you will leave with a longer dive wish list than when you arrived.
