A Wisconsin volunteer search and recovery organisation has recovered the body of a missing shipwreck diver from Lake Michigan following a difficult operation approximately 20 miles offshore.
Bruce’s Legacy Search & Recovery was called in after the diver, identified in the organisation’s statement only as Michael, went missing on September 4, 2026. According to WFRV’s report of the recovery, the team located and recovered him from approximately 160 feet (49 metres) of water.
The organisation said the operation presented some of the most difficult and unusual challenges its volunteers had encountered. Working so far offshore, in deep water, required additional planning and consideration of equipment, weather and safety.
Bruce’s Legacy also reported that its volunteers had to bring Michael back to shore themselves, rather than receiving assistance from local agencies during that part of the operation. The team described this as an unfamiliar and particularly difficult responsibility.
The recovery brought an end to the family’s wait on shore. In its statement, the organisation expressed gratitude that it had been able to bring Michael home.
A specialist volunteer recovery organisation
Based in Wisconsin, Bruce’s Legacy is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to helping families affected by drowning tragedies. Its volunteers use specialist equipment, including side-scan sonar and remotely operated vehicles, to locate and recover people from underwater environments.
The organisation was founded by Keith Cormican and has undertaken challenging recovery operations in the United States and internationally. Its work is intended to provide families with answers and the opportunity to bring loved ones home.
The Lake Michigan operation illustrates the demands placed on specialist recovery teams when a search takes place in deep water, far from shore. Such missions can involve difficult weather, limited access and considerable logistical challenges, in addition to the emotional responsibility of working with grieving families.
Circumstances remain unclear
The diver’s full name, age and hometown have not been confirmed in the information currently available. The wreck he was visiting and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance have also not been established.
No official cause of death has been confirmed, and there is no verified information indicating whether equipment, medical factors or diving conditions contributed to the incident.
