Emergency crews were called to the southern end of Beausoleil Island at 7:15 p.m. Sunday, March 29, 2026 after a 911 report of a serious incident on the ice.
Police from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP say the 62-year-old man lost control of his snowmobile and was thrown off. Another rider who was with him remained at the scene and contacted emergency services for help.
A large-scale response was launched to reach the isolated area, involving:
- Air Support: An OPP helicopter helped locate and access the scene.
- Emergency Personnel: Simcoe County paramedics, firefighters, and police all responded.
Authorities also used a civilian airboat to reach the site. The injured man was brought back to land, where paramedics performed life-saving procedures before transporting him to hospital. He was later pronounced dead.
Authorities have indicated that alcohol consumption is not considered a factor in the incident. To determine the exact cause, the Ontario Provincial Police Technical Traffic Investigations unit has been called in to support the active and ongoing inquiry.
Despite the coordinated emergency effort, the man from Penetanguishene succumbed to his injuries. Investigators continue to examine what caused the snowmobile to go out of control.
