Monterey Bay DivingMonterey Bay Diving (MBD) is currently working on a grant for our Side Scan Sonar to help clean the Ocean of lost fishing gear and trash. MBD is in the beginning stages of a large project to clear the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary of abandoned crab fishing gear. In our area, a fair number of whales and other marine life are getting tangled in the gear. Just this year alone, local fishers have reported losing over 400 crab pots – each one still having hundreds of feet of polypropylene line that mammals are getting caught in. Let alone, most of this fishing gear continues to do its job of capturing target sea life and bycatch in a process known as ‘Ghost Fishing’. This ‘Ghost Fishing’ hurts both the economy and the environment. MBD’s efforts will help remove these vestigial threats to marine life. MBD’s Side Scan Sonar provides a high-resolution sea floor imagery, which can not only pick up the crab pots themselves but also the line attached to them.
