A scuba diver has died after getting into difficulty in the waters off Radazul on the Spanish island of Tenerife.
The incident occurred on Saturday, September 12, near the coast of Radazul in the municipality of El Rosario.
According to reporting based on information from the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre, emergency services received an alert at approximately 10:34am reporting that a diver was in difficulty close to the coastline.
The diver was recovered from the water and taken by boat to the port at Radazul, where personnel from the Canary Islands Emergency Service were waiting.
Medical teams found the diver in cardiac arrest and carried out both basic and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Despite their efforts, he could not be revived and was pronounced dead.
The emergency response also involved Salvamento Marítimo, the beach rescue service, Local Police and the Guardia Civil.
At the time of publication, authorities had not publicly confirmed the circumstances that caused the diver to get into difficulty.
Radazul is a well-known diving location on Tenerife, with relatively easy shore access and depths extending beyond 40 metres close to shore. Its sheltered location also makes it a frequently used site when conditions elsewhere on the island are less favourable.
Just days before the incident, Radazul hosted the VIII Spanish Outdoor Freediving Championship, held from September 4 to 6, further underlining the area’s importance to Tenerife’s diving and freediving community. The event was organised by FEDECAS with support from FEDAS and local and regional authorities.
The Guardia Civil was among the agencies involved in the response.
