A 29-year-old freediver has died after being struck by the propeller of an inflatable boat off the Italian island of Lampedusa.
The victim has been identified as Cristiano Daniele Giamporcaro, a filmmaker from Caltanissetta, Sicily.
The incident happened on Saturday, August 8, 2026, in the waters off Punta Sottile, Lampedusa.
According to Italian news reports, Giamporcaro was in the water without scuba cylinders and was engaged in spearfishing, making this a freediving incident rather than a scuba-diving accident.
He was struck by an inflatable boat carrying two people. The boat’s propeller caused fatal injuries.
Reports state that Giamporcaro was using a surface marker buoy to indicate his position in the water.
The Italian Coast Guard was involved in the recovery operation, and his body was subsequently recovered from the sea.
Investigation Underway
The Agrigento Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into the death on suspicion of nautical homicide.
The boat involved has been seized as part of the investigation. The man who was operating the boat is under investigation, while his wife was also aboard. The two have been questioned by investigators.
The investigation is intended to establish precisely how the collision occurred and whether there was any criminal responsibility.
An autopsy has also been ordered to establish the precise medical cause of death.
At this stage, the circumstances leading to the collision remain under investigation. There is no established basis for stating that the boat was travelling at a particular speed, that the operator failed to see the surface marker buoy, or that either party was negligent.
For freedivers and spearfishermen, the incident is a tragic reminder of the risks posed by boat traffic when operating in areas shared with surface vessels.
A surface marker buoy can identify a diver’s location, but the circumstances of this particular collision have not yet been established. The investigation will need to determine the visibility and position of the buoy, the boat’s course and other factors surrounding the incident.
The investigation in Lampedusa remains ongoing.
