There are milestones in business that feel planned, and then there are the ones that quietly arrive and make you stop for a moment.
This month marks the anniversary of The Scuba News.
Not just another date on a calendar, but a reminder of how something small, almost incidental at the time, can grow into something far bigger than originally imagined.
Because the truth is, this was never supposed to become what it is today.
In March 2013, I registered thescubanews.com as a side project to support the diving clients of DiveMedia. It had a purpose, but it was modest. Functional. Useful, but not ambitious in the way it would later become.
One month later, the website launched.
But who knew where that would lead.
Who knew that it would grow into a worldwide resource for divers, a hub for news, reviews, offers, and features from across the global scuba diving industry. Or that it would evolve into something that occupies not just my working hours, but my thinking, my focus, and, at times, even my sleep.
And yet, here we are.
This Was Never Built Alone
It would be easy to frame this as a business story. Growth, consistency, persistence.
But that would miss the point entirely.
The Scuba News exists today because of people.
Readers who return daily, not out of habit, but because they trust what they find here. Divers who share articles, comment on stories, and send in tips from every corner of the world. Subscribers who choose to stay connected, even when attention is the most valuable currency online.
Then there are the contributors.
Writers, photographers, industry insiders, and passionate divers who have taken the time to share their experiences, their knowledge, and their perspective. Every article has helped shape what The Scuba News has become, not just in volume, but in voice.
And behind the scenes, a distributed team of editors across the world.
Different time zones, different backgrounds, different experiences, all working toward the same goal, to ensure that what gets published is worth a diver’s time. Quietly, consistently, often without recognition, but absolutely essential to everything you see.
The Industry That Made It Possible
This platform would not exist without the diving industry itself.
Dive centres, liveaboards, training agencies, equipment manufacturers, tourism boards, innovators, and entrepreneurs who continue to push the boundaries of what diving can be.
And importantly, the advertisers and partners who have supported The Scuba News.
Not just as a marketing channel, but as a platform worth investing in. Their support has allowed the publication to grow, to improve, and to remain independent in a way that prioritises divers first.
That balance matters.
Because trust is everything in this space.
More Than Content
Over time, The Scuba News has become more than a website.
It has become a meeting point.
A place where breaking news sits alongside destination features. Where industry developments sit next to personal stories. Where new divers and experienced professionals can find something relevant, something useful, something worth reading.
It reflects the diversity of the diving world itself.
And that is something no single person, no single team, could ever manufacture alone.
Still Building
Anniversaries tend to look backwards.
But the reality is, this is still very much a work in progress.
There is more to build, more to refine, more to explore. The diving industry continues to evolve, and The Scuba News will continue to evolve with it.
But the foundation remains the same.
This is a platform built by a global diving community.
And every reader, every contributor, every advertiser, every editor, and every diver who has engaged with The Scuba News in any way has played a part in getting it here.
A Simple Thank You
So this anniversary is not about marking time.
It is about acknowledging what has been created, together.
And simply saying thank you.
Because without you, this does not exist.
And it never would have.
