A humpback whale was found dead off the coast of British Columbia following a reported collision involving a ferry. According to BC Ferries, the crew of the Northern Expedition reported striking a whale on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, in Wright Sound, near Prince Rupert.
The Northern Expedition is a 151-metre ferry built in 2009. It has the capacity to carry up to 638 passengers and 115 vehicles and serves BC Ferries’ northern routes, including the open-water crossing between Prince Rupert and Port Hardy.
BC Ferries said the incident was promptly reported to federal agencies, local First Nations, and marine researchers. The following morning, at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, a deceased whale was located in the vicinity.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada is expected to lead a necropsy to determine how the whale died, the ferry operator said.
