Santa’s reindeer may need to swim, not fly, at Welland

The Christmas tree being raised at Welland Scuba Park on Dec. 17 won’t need a container of water at its base.  That’s because the tree will be under water in the annual “Christmas Tree Dive.”

People are asked to arrive at the dive site  by 11 a.m. to get the Christmas tree decorations ready.  Divers will enter the water at 11:45 a.m.  Last year’s tree is still on the side of the wooden platform.  The most creative tree decoration will win a prize. Divers plan to enter the water at 11:45 a.m.

Each diver is asked to bring a Christmas decoration and it will be added to last year’s tree. Hopefully, the water won’t be stirred up because organizers want a group photo underwater. Extra decorations, wire and fishing line will be provided.

For those with an appetite there will be homemade turkey stew, with cranberries topped with stuffing. Hot chocolate and shortbread will follow. Hopefully, there will be something left for Santa Claus.

Organizers are asking for an RSVP so they can prepare enough food for the occasion.  The event is sponsored by Durrell Martin.
