Broward Sheriff’s Office marine unit retrieved the body, which was clad in Scuba gear and had a dive tank around 2:25 p.m.

The victim was later identified as 48-year-old David Lemonds, from Aiken, South Carolina. Authorities said local kayakers saw Lemonds leave John U. Lloyd Beach State Park on Thursday morning in a 12-foot yellow ocean kayak.

Park rangers alerted the Coast Guard on Friday after seeing Lemonds’ truck had remained undisturbed overnight.

The Broward Medical Examiner is working to determine the cause of death.
