A man has died after being pulled unresponsive from the ocean off Hallandale Beach in Broward County, Florida.
Hallandale Beach Police received reports of an unresponsive person in the water near the 1800 block of South Ocean Drive shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026.
According to information provided by police to CBS News Miami, the man appeared to have been diving before he was found in distress.
Hallandale Beach Ocean Rescue personnel brought him from the water and immediately began lifesaving measures. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue subsequently transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Reporting from the Miami Herald cites Hallandale Beach Police spokesperson Grace Mariot as saying investigators believe the man was freediving when he lost consciousness underwater.
An independent report from WSVN 7News also confirmed that Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded near South Ocean Drive and Hallandale Beach Boulevard before transporting the man to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing emergency personnel performing resuscitation attempts on the beach before the man was taken to hospital.
Police have not released the diver’s name or age. Investigators have said there are currently no indications of foul play, although the circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation.
Authorities have not established why the diver lost consciousness. There has also been no official confirmation of shallow-water blackout, a medical emergency or any other specific cause.
