A 21-year-old fisherman has died after becoming critically ill following a dive off the coast of Tulum, Mexico.
The incident occurred at Punta Piedra, a beach area south of central Tulum, where the young fisherman was reportedly diving as part of his fishing activity.
Local media identified the fisherman as Denis Alexander Tun Pech, who is listed in Quintana Roo government fisheries records as a registered fisherman associated with the Pescadores de Tulum cooperative.
According to reports from Mexican media, the fisherman experienced a serious medical emergency after surfacing from the dive. He was reportedly found unconscious and in critical condition, with fellow fishermen attempting to assist him before emergency responders arrived.
Paramedics reportedly performed resuscitation efforts before transporting him for medical treatment.
Local reports subsequently stated that Denis Alexander was taken to a medical facility in Tulum and later transferred to the General Hospital in Playa del Carmen as his condition remained critical.
He later died in hospital.
Cause of death not officially confirmed
Some early reports attributed the emergency to suspected decompression sickness, but this has not been established as the confirmed cause of death.
Canal 10 reported that the precise cause of the incident had not been officially determined and that further medical and forensic investigation would be required.
That distinction is important. While the circumstances have led local reports to suggest a decompression-related emergency, there is currently insufficient evidence to state that decompression sickness was definitively responsible for the young fisherman’s death.
The incident highlights the particular risks faced by fishing communities in the Mexican Caribbean, where diving is an established part of some fishing operations.
Government and fisheries documentation confirms that Tulum has an established fishing cooperative and that local fishermen operate in an area where diving is used as part of fishing activity.
For The Scuba News, the incident also serves as a reminder that diving emergencies involving professional or subsistence fishermen can present very different circumstances from recreational diving incidents. Working divers may undertake repeated dives during a fishing operation, potentially creating additional decompression-management challenges.
However, no conclusion should be drawn about the diving profile, depth, equipment, ascent or medical circumstances involved in this particular case until further information is released.
The death of Denis Alexander Tun Pech is being reported by several Mexican media outlets, while the precise medical cause remains unconfirmed.
The Scuba News will update this report if further information is released by Mexican authorities or medical officials
