A British diver remains in critical condition after suffering a medical emergency during a diving holiday in India, with her family describing the situation as “every family’s worst nightmare.”
Angela Munroe, from Eastwood, Essex, became seriously ill on 22 July while travelling in India. According to a fundraising campaign organised by her family, she was airlifted to hospital and remains in intensive care in an induced coma.
Her daughter, Sophie, who organised the appeal, said the family received the devastating news while Angela’s husband, Steve, was still in India.
“This is every family’s worst nightmare.”
The fundraiser explains that Steve has remained by Angela’s bedside since she was admitted to hospital, while other family members have travelled to India to support them during what they describe as an incredibly difficult time.
At the time of publication, neither the family nor any official authority has disclosed the precise nature of Angela’s medical condition. Likewise, there has been no confirmation from local authorities, the treating hospital or the dive operator that her illness was caused by a diving-related incident.
That distinction is important.
While Angela became ill during a diving trip, there is currently no verified evidence that her condition resulted from decompression illness, equipment failure or any other diving accident. Divers, like any traveller, can experience medical emergencies unrelated to the act of diving itself.
The family’s fundraising page says donations will help cover the considerable costs of emergency medical care, accommodation, flights and other expenses incurred while remaining in India throughout Angela’s treatment.
As the diving community often rallies around fellow divers and their families during times of crisis, the appeal has already attracted widespread support from friends, relatives and well-wishers.
