A diver in his 60s was rescued after suffering cardiac arrest while scuba diving off Seopseom Island, near Seogwipo on South Korea’s Jeju Island, according to local media.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:20 a.m. on 2 August, when emergency services received reports of a diver in distress in waters near the popular dive site.
Rescue teams responded quickly, recovering the diver from the water before transporting him to hospital. Reports state that he was in cardiac arrest when he was rescued.
Authorities have not released further information regarding the diver’s condition.
The Jeju Coast Guard and local fire authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including what may have led to the medical emergency.
Seopseom Island, located just offshore from Seogwipo on Jeju’s southern coast, is one of South Korea’s best-known dive destinations. The area attracts divers throughout the year for its volcanic underwater landscapes, diverse marine life and generally favourable visibility.
At this stage, investigators have not indicated whether the cardiac arrest resulted from an underlying medical condition, a diving-related emergency or another factor. No further details have been released.
