A South Florida man is facing attempted murder charges after investigators say he intentionally disconnected the air supply of a diver using a surface-supplied hookah system, leaving the victim to make an emergency ascent.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred during a dispute on the water involving recreational divers. Detectives allege that 51-year-old Daniel Rapp deliberately disconnected the victim’s hookah air hose while the diver was underwater.
Hookah diving systems supply breathing air from the surface through a long hose connected to a compressor or air pump aboard a boat. Unlike scuba equipment, divers using these systems rely entirely on their uninterrupted surface air supply.
Investigators say the victim immediately recognised the loss of air and made an emergency ascent to the surface, avoiding what authorities described as a potentially fatal outcome. The diver survived without life-threatening injuries.
Following their investigation, Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested Rapp on charges including attempted felony murder and additional offences relating to the incident. Authorities have not released further details regarding the circumstances leading to the alleged altercation or whether the individuals knew each other beforehand. The allegations remain before the courts and have not been proven.
Why Disconnecting a Hookah Air Supply Is So Dangerous
Unlike scuba divers, hookah divers generally do not carry a large reserve cylinder of breathing gas. While some divers use emergency bailout cylinders, many rely solely on the surface-supplied air system.
A sudden interruption can result in:
- Immediate loss of breathable air.
- Panic and rapid ascent.
- Increased risk of lung overexpansion injuries.
- Decompression illness if the diver has been at depth long enough to require controlled ascent.
- Drowning if the diver cannot reach the surface safely.
The incident serves as a stark reminder that intentionally interfering with a diver’s life-support equipment can have potentially fatal consequences.
Investigation Continues
The Broward Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident. As with all criminal proceedings, the accused is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
