Chaos Divers has returned to the Ohio River as the volunteer underwater search team continues its long-running effort to find Karen Adams and the car that disappeared with her nearly two decades ago.
A volunteer team of divers has returned to the Ohio River in West Virginia to search for a woman who vanished after leaving a casino almost 20 years ago.
Chaos Divers is searching the river near New Cumberland for Karen Sue Adams, who disappeared after visiting Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort in March 2007.
The southern Illinois-based search-and-recovery organisation arrived in the area last week and has deployed three boats equipped with sonar as it searches for Adams’ missing vehicle.
Adams was 54 when she disappeared. She had travelled from her home in Pennsylvania to Mountaineer on March 11, 2007.
Surveillance footage reportedly showed Adams leaving the casino complex at approximately 4:31 a.m. the following morning. Neither Adams nor the red or maroon 2005 Suzuki Forenza she was driving has been located since.
Divers Return to the Ohio River
Chaos Divers has been investigating Adams’ disappearance since 2021 and has previously conducted underwater searches for her vehicle.
The team’s latest operation is concentrating on the Ohio River around New Cumberland.
According to local reporting from WTOV9, search crews first use sonar to identify objects beneath the surface that could potentially be vehicles.
When a possible target is detected, its location can be marked before divers enter the water to determine exactly what the sonar has identified.
If the team discovers a vehicle connected with a missing-person investigation, law enforcement is contacted so that the vehicle and any potential evidence can be recovered through the appropriate authorities.
The process allows the divers to systematically eliminate submerged vehicles and other sonar targets while continuing to narrow down possible locations.
A Search That Has Continued for Years
The latest operation is not Chaos Divers’ first attempt to find Adams.
The volunteer organisation has been involved with the case for several years, conducting previous searches of waterways in the region for the missing Suzuki.
Chaos Divers specialises in searching for vehicles associated with unresolved missing-person cases. The group says it has helped locate 23 missing people during the past four and a half years.
Its work has become part of a growing movement of volunteer divers and sonar specialists using modern underwater search technology to revisit cases where investigators have exhausted conventional leads.
For families left without answers, eliminating waterways and submerged vehicles can itself provide useful information. In other cases, underwater searches have provided the breakthrough required to resolve disappearances that had remained unexplained for years.
Nearly Two Decades Without Answers
Adams’ disappearance remains unresolved.
Missing-person records state that she was last seen leaving the Mountaineer complex in the early hours of March 12, 2007. Her vehicle disappeared at the same time.
Almost two decades later, finding that vehicle remains one of the most important unanswered elements of the case.
Chaos Divers is continuing its search of the Ohio River near New Cumberland, with no discovery of Adams or her vehicle reported at the time of publication.
