A scuba diving incident off the southern coast of Jeju Island has resulted in the death of a woman in her 40s, according to a report in The Chosun Daily.
The incident took place near Munseom Island, a well-known dive site popular for its clear waters and volcanic reef structures. Emergency services responded after the diver was reportedly found unconscious in the water and brought ashore, where she was later pronounced dead.
Authorities, including the Korea Coast Guard, have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. No official cause of death has been confirmed at this stage.
Details remain limited, and it is not yet clear whether the diver was part of a guided group, her level of experience, or the exact conditions at the time of the dive.
Diving incidents in the waters around Jeju are relatively uncommon, although the island’s exposed coastal environment and changing conditions can present challenges even for experienced divers. Sites around Seogwipo, including Munseom, are widely regarded as some of South Korea’s most rewarding, attracting both local and international divers.
The case remains under investigation, and further updates are expected as authorities release more information.
