A missing diver has been found dead in waters off Sand Island following an extensive multi-agency search operation, according to multiple local reports.
Authorities say the diver, believed to be a man in his 30s, was reported overdue after failing to return from a planned dive near Mokauea Fishing Village. The incident quickly escalated into a coordinated search involving the Honolulu Fire Department, Honolulu Ocean Safety, and the United States Coast Guard.
Initial search efforts located a kayak offshore, prompting further concern when it was determined the vessel did not belong to the missing diver. Air and sea assets continued sweeping the area until a Coast Guard helicopter crew located the diver approximately two miles offshore.
The body was recovered and transported back to shore.
Local outlet Honolulu Star-Advertiser first reported the recovery, with further confirmation from Hawaii News Now, both citing emergency services involved in the operation. Police have since opened an unattended death investigation, and the diver’s identity has not yet been publicly released.
At this stage, there is no official confirmation regarding the cause of death.
A reminder of inherent risks
While details remain limited, the incident highlights the risks associated with solo or remote diving activities, particularly when conducted from small vessels such as kayaks. Even in relatively accessible coastal areas, changing conditions, equipment issues, or medical events can rapidly escalate into life-threatening situations.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to release further details in the coming days.
