A French diver has died following an incident during a recreational dive off Spain’s Costa Brava, with authorities now investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatality.
According to reporting from Spanish national outlet El País, the diver, believed to be around 70 years old, was part of a small group diving near Port de la Selva when the incident occurred.
The group had entered the water in buddy pairs near the s’Arenella lighthouse. During the dive, one diver noticed that his partner had stopped following and appeared to be sinking.
The diver was recovered and brought to the surface, where emergency services were alerted. Responders attempted resuscitation for approximately 30 minutes, but the diver could not be revived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Spanish emergency services and the Guardia Civil responded to the incident, with judicial police overseeing the case. The body has been transferred for autopsy in Girona, which is expected to determine the exact cause of death.
At this stage, no official cause has been confirmed. As with many diving incidents, investigations will consider a range of factors, including medical conditions, equipment, and dive profile.
Costa Brava remains one of Spain’s most popular diving regions, known for its clear waters and varied underwater landscapes. Incidents of this nature are rare, but they highlight the importance of buddy awareness and rapid response when issues arise underwater.
Authorities have not released the diver’s identity.
