Canadian cave diver, underwater explorer, author and filmmaker Jill Heinerth has been named the 2026 recipient of the 21st Century Adventurer Award. Presented by Defender and the European Outdoor Film Tour (EOFT), the international award was presented to Heinerth in Munich, Germany, on July 21, 2026.
The award celebrates contemporary adventurers whose courage, accomplishments and sense of purpose create an impact beyond exploration itself. Heinerth was recognized for her pioneering underwater expeditions, environmental advocacy and commitment to revealing and protecting the hidden water systems beneath the Earth’s surface.
For more than 30 years, Heinerth has explored, documented and mapped submerged caves around the world. Her groundbreaking expeditions have taken her inside an Antarctic iceberg, deep into Mexican cenotes and through some of the longest underwater cave systems on the planet. Her work combines exploration, science, photography and filmmaking to help people understand the essential connection between groundwater and life on the surface.
“This award is a tremendous honour for me and for the diving community,” said Heinerth. “Cave divers have the privilege of visiting places that few people will ever see. With that privilege comes a responsibility to document these environments, share what we learn and inspire others to protect our water resources.”
Heinerth intends to use a portion of the award funds to continue her exploration and research in the Kichi Sibi Ottawa River cave system. She will also support outreach designed to encourage and equip future generations of underwater explorers. A trailblazer for women in technical and cave diving, Heinerth has worked throughout her career to make exploration more inclusive and to mentor emerging leaders in underwater exploration and science.
She is Honorary Vice-President of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, Honorary Ottawa Riverkeeper, a recipient of Canada’s Polar Medal and a Fellow of the International Scuba Divers Hall of Fame. Beyond her expeditions, Heinerth is an accomplished author, photographer, filmmaker and professional keynote speaker. Represented by Speakers Spotlight, she brings lessons from exploration to corporate audiences through presentations about risk assessment, navigating change and developing an explorer’s mindset.
Heinerth lives in Carleton Place, Ontario, Canada, where she continues her work as an explorer, educator and advocate for water conservation.
