The search for a missing diver off Pulau Tenggol has been officially called off after several days with no new leads, bringing a sombre conclusion to a case that has been closely followed by the diving community.
According to a report in The Star, authorities ended the search and rescue operation after exhausting all viable options, with no trace of the diver found despite an extensive multi-agency effort.
The diver, identified as 66-year-old Tam Peng Hoong, disappeared during a dive near the popular east coast Malaysian island. He had been diving with his son when he failed to surface, triggering an immediate response from emergency services.
As previously reported by The Scuba News, the incident prompted a large-scale search involving the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, local police, and other rescue units. Over several days, teams conducted coordinated surface searches and area sweeps, but conditions and the absence of any confirmed sightings made progress increasingly difficult.
Authorities confirmed that the decision to suspend the operation was made after careful assessment of all available information. With no new evidence or developments, the likelihood of locating the diver diminished, leading officials to formally conclude the search phase.
Pulau Tenggol is widely regarded as one of Malaysia’s top diving destinations, known for its clear waters and strong marine biodiversity. However, like many offshore dive locations, it can present challenging conditions, particularly with currents and changing visibility, factors that can complicate search and recovery efforts.
While incidents of this nature remain rare, they serve as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with diving, even in well-established locations. The loss has resonated across the regional diving community, particularly given the circumstances of the diver being accompanied by family at the time of the incident.
The case now moves from an active search and rescue operation to an unresolved missing person investigation.
