A new scuba-focused feature film inspired by adaptive diving is moving closer to production, highlighting how underwater exploration can change lives both above and below the surface.
According to a report in The Spokesman‑Review, filmmaker and dive instructor David Marsh is preparing to bring Sharing Air to life, a project rooted in real-world experiences within the adaptive diving community.
From Diver to Filmmaker
Marsh’s journey into filmmaking grew from a lifelong interest in storytelling. After studying biology and working in several fields, he eventually shifted toward video production and marketing before discovering scuba diving, which became a turning point in his creative career.
Through his involvement with the nonprofit Diveheart, which focuses on adaptive scuba programs for people with disabilities, Marsh began documenting divers overcoming fears and rediscovering confidence underwater. The experience led him to create the documentary Adapting to Dive, which explored resilience and personal transformation through diving.
The success of that project encouraged him to expand the concept into a narrative feature film.
A Story Built Around Adaptive Diving
Sharing Air centres on a troubled scuba instructor who helps disabled divers regain freedom underwater while confronting his own past. The film draws inspiration from Diveheart founder Jim Elliot’s novel of the same name and aims to present scuba diving not just as a sport, but as a powerful tool for rehabilitation and emotional healing.
Production is expected to begin soon, with underwater sequences planned for the Florida Keys. The project has attracted experienced underwater filmmakers, reinforcing its goal of capturing authentic dive environments and real adaptive diving stories.
One notable aspect of the production is its casting approach. Rather than relying solely on actors, the film includes real veterans and individuals with disabilities, reflecting the inclusive ethos of the adaptive diving movement.
Diving as the Hero of the Story
Beyond its narrative arc, the film positions scuba diving itself as a central character. By exploring underwater environments and personal journeys at the same time, the production hopes to introduce wider audiences to adaptive diving and the transformative experiences many divers describe.
Marsh has expressed hopes that the finished film will find a streaming platform and reach a global audience, further raising awareness of inclusive diving programs and the broader benefits of the underwater world.
