The National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) is proud to announce a new partnership with Ocean Reef Group to offer specialty courses focused on diving with Ocean Reef full face masks. This collaboration brings together two dive industry innovators committed to safety, comfort, and expanding access to underwater exploration.
Ocean Reef’s full face integrated diving masks (IDMs) combine the regulator and mask into a single unit designed for natural, nose and mouth breathing, enhanced field of vision, and improved comfort underwater. Features include an integrated regulator system, internal airflow design to reduce fog, and a surface air valve that allows ambient breathing at the surface without removing the mask — all of which support a seamless and intuitive dive experience.
Ocean Reef’s full face masks offer several advantages over traditional mask/regulator setups. Divers can breathe through both nose and mouth, reducing jaw fatigue and dry mouth, while enjoying a panoramic view that enhances situational awareness underwater. The integrated design also allows for more efficient air circulation and comfort during longer dives.
The courses covers both academic and in-water training, with a strong emphasis on safety, comfort, and situational awareness. Divers will learn how to correctly fit, don, and remove the Ocean Reef full face mask, understand the unique airflow and breathing characteristics, and manage buoyancy and trim while using the system.
Key training topics include:
- Proper setup, fitting, and adjustment of Ocean Reef full face masks
- Breathing techniques using an integrated mask and regulator
- Emergency procedures specific to full face mask diving, including mask removal and regulator switching
- Mask clearing, surface air valve use, and controlled ascents
- Dive planning considerations when using a full face mask
An optional underwater communications module will be offered alongside the full face mask course, introducing divers to the use of Ocean Reef communication systems. These systems allow divers to communicate clearly underwater, enhancing safety, coordination, and overall dive experience.
This portion of the training focuses on practical use rather than technology overload, making it accessible to recreational divers while still meeting professional-level safety expectations.
Training elements include:
- Basics of underwater voice communication and system operation
- Proper use of communication units with Ocean Reef full face masks
- Communication protocols, etiquette, and common terminology
- Team awareness, task coordination, and emergency communication
- Real-world scenarios demonstrating how communication improves dive safety and efficiency
Underwater communication is particularly valuable for instructors, dive leaders, photographers, scientific divers, and divers who benefit from real-time verbal instruction or reassurance underwater.
Why These Courses Matter
Together, the Full Face Mask and Communications training programs reflect a shared commitment by NAUI and Ocean Reef to innovation, accessibility, and diver confidence. By pairing advanced equipment with proper education, this partnership helps divers explore new tools responsibly while maintaining the highest safety standards.
These courses also expand options for divers who may struggle with traditional regulator setups, support instructional and professional diving applications, and open the door to clearer communication and stronger team dynamics underwater.
The joint specialty courses are now available. Divers completing the program will gain skills and confidence to use Ocean Reef full face masks safely and effectively across a range of dive environments.
