Each winter, as festive lights appear across towns and cities, a quieter celebration takes place beneath the surface of Lake Ohrid. Divers from the Amfora Diving Center once again marked the holiday season by placing and decorating a Christmas tree on the lakebed, continuing a tradition that has become part of the region’s seasonal identity.
The dive took place near the Bay of Bones, one of Lake Ohrid’s most recognisable locations, where the decorated tree was carefully secured underwater by members of the local dive community. Wearing Santa hats and festive gear, the divers completed the installation in cold freshwater conditions, highlighting both their skill and their commitment to maintaining the long-running custom.
A Tradition Rooted in Community
The underwater Christmas tree is not a publicity stunt or a one-off event. It has been carried out for more than two decades and is widely regarded locally as a symbol of goodwill, unity, and respect for the lake. Over the years, the dive has often been linked with charitable and community-focused initiatives, including awareness efforts involving volunteer groups and local organisations.
Lake Ohrid itself is one of Europe’s oldest and deepest freshwater lakes and holds UNESCO World Heritage status, recognised for both its cultural and natural importance. Divers involved in the annual festive dive regularly emphasise environmental responsibility, ensuring that all materials used are safely removed after the event to protect the lake’s fragile ecosystem.
Cold Water, Clear Purpose
Winter diving in Lake Ohrid is not without its challenges. Water temperatures drop significantly, requiring drysuits, careful planning, and experienced cold-water diving techniques. For the Amfora team, however, the technical demands are part of what makes the tradition meaningful.
Beyond the spectacle, the dive serves as a reminder of the strong connection between Ohrid’s diving community and the lake itself. While most holiday celebrations take place above water, this one happens quietly below the surface, out of sight to many, yet deeply rooted in local culture.
A Seasonal Message Beneath the Surface
As images and footage of the dive circulate internationally, the underwater Christmas tree continues to attract attention not only for its novelty but for what it represents. It is a story of tradition, community spirit, and divers using their skills to celebrate the season in a way that reflects their environment.
For the divers of Lake Ohrid, the message is simple. Even beneath the surface, the holiday spirit finds a way to shine.
