Jamaica has officially reopened to international tourists ahead of the peak winter travel season, following a rapid and coordinated recovery after Hurricane Melissa caused disruption across the island earlier this year.
Tourism authorities confirmed that international airports, major resort areas, cruise ports, and visitor services are once again operational, allowing travellers to return as winter demand begins to build. According to Carib Journal, Jamaica welcomed more than 300,000 visitors in the weeks following the storm as infrastructure and tourism services were progressively restored.
The reopening follows a recovery plan designed to ensure the island was ready before mid-December, traditionally one of the busiest periods for Caribbean travel. Officials indicated that restoring air access, accommodation capacity, and tourism corridors was prioritised to protect jobs and maintain traveller confidence, particularly in coastal regions reliant on winter tourism.
Independent confirmation of the reopening has also been reported by Travel and Tour World, which noted that airports, hotels, resorts, and cruise operations had all resumed in time for the winter season.
Major gateways including Montego Bay and Kingston are now handling regular international arrivals, while resort areas such as Negril and Ocho Rios continue to increase accommodation availability as properties complete repairs. Cruise traffic has also returned, supporting shore-based excursions and marine tourism activities important to the wider visitor economy.
Tourism plays a critical role in Jamaica’s economy, supporting a significant proportion of national employment. The successful reopening is therefore seen not only as positive news for travellers seeking a winter escape, but as a key step in stabilising livelihoods and rebuilding momentum into 2026.
For divers planning Caribbean trips this winter, the reopening restores access to Jamaica’s reefs, marine life, and coastal experiences at a time when many destinations are entering their prime season.
