The “Picnic Point Barge”—often referred to as the “Picnic Point Wreck”—is an intriguing but still–unverified shipwreck resting in the Saint Lawrence River. Featured in a video created by divers Ken Kozin and Dan Gildea, the site has drawn renewed interest as researchers and diving enthusiasts work to document the many wrecks scattered throughout the river. Additional discussion and updates about the site can be found through resources such as Shotline Diving and the Ontario Divers Facebook community.
Located near Picnic Point, the barge earned its informal name simply from its proximity to the area. Little is known about its origins, and efforts are ongoing to uncover its history and determine how it came to rest on the riverbed. Since appearing in Kozin and Gildea’s video, the wreck has become a favored destination for divers exploring the Saint Lawrence River’s underwater heritage, adding one more mystery to the region’s collection of historic submerged vessels.
