A Malaysian military commando who went missing during a scuba diving training exercise at Kuantan Port has been found deceased, nearly 48 hours after the incident.
Corporal Mohd Haswansir Julnasir, 30, was discovered around 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. His body was found on a rocky embankment approximately 300 metres from his last known location. He was still wearing his full diving gear.
According to a report from New Straits Times, the incident occurred during a scheduled dive on Thursday involving four commandos from the 22nd Regiment, based at Kem Iskandar in Mersing, Johor. The divers had entered the water using a safety rope as part of a standard scuba training procedure.
Acting Kuantan district police chief, Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud, stated that one of the divers was believed to have become detached from the safety line and was swept away by the current. The absence was only realised when three of the four divers resurfaced at approximately 12:15 p.m.
An immediate search was initiated by the other divers, but their efforts were unsuccessful. A formal missing person report was filed at 3:19 p.m., prompting a coordinated search and rescue operation involving police, fire and rescue teams, and armed forces personnel.
The victim’s body has been transported to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) for a post-mortem examination.
Corporal Mohd Haswansir had been participating in the training session scheduled to run from June 30 to July 9.
