Dive Boat Hits Scapa Flow Diver During Decompression Stop

The UK Governments Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) have launched an investigation into an incident in which a diver was struck by a passing dive boat during a decompression stop which resulted in a fatality.

Following our report on 1st October into a missing diver at Scapa Flow, the deceased was identified as 70 year old Paul Smith. According to various reports he was found on the island of Cava, 13 days after going missing.

The MAIB current investigations page lists the incidents as “A passing dive support vessel struck a recreational diver making an underwater decompression stop” and identifies the vessel involved as the MV Karin.

The Scapa Flow based MV Karin is a 24m liveaboard with 7 twin berth cabins.
