Urge the Canadian government to end the commercial seal hunt and issue emergency directives to protect baby seals.
In 2021, climate change has caused the lowest sea ice formation in recorded history off of Canada’s East Coast. For the seals, it is a disaster. Mother seals will give birth on small, fragile ice floes that will melt long before their babies are strong enough to survive in the water. Government scientists expect mass seal pup mortality this year as a result.
Unbelievably, despite the unprecedented sea ice deterioration—and the ongoing pandemic—the Canadian government intends to allow sealers to slaughter the surviving baby seals. These poor pups will be shot at and clubbed near open water, and many wounded animals will escape and die slowly. Others will be impaled on metal hooks — some still conscious — and dragged onto bloody boat decks and beaten to death.
