Alabama marine officials are preparing to inspect the recently sunk Argosy VI after divers documented substantial structural changes to the huge artificial reef less than two months after it was placed on the seabed.
The 408-foot former casino vessel was deliberately sunk on July 1, 2026, approximately 23 nautical miles south of Orange Beach as one of the largest additions to Alabama’s extensive artificial reef network.
Now, imagery captured by local divers appears to show sections of the vessel’s upper structure fractured and damaged, raising questions about how the wreck has changed during its first weeks beneath the Gulf.
The Alabama Marine Resources Division is reportedly aware of the findings and plans to conduct its own underwater survey of the vessel. State divers are expected to obtain video of both the upper structure and areas deeper within the wreck before officials determine whether any additional guidance for recreational divers is necessary.
A Major New Alabama Dive Site
The Argosy VI had only recently begun its second life beneath the surface.
As the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources explained ahead of the deployment, the four-level vessel measures 408 feet long and more than 80 feet wide. It was intentionally placed in approximately 122 feet of water inside the 364-square-mile Dr. Robert (Bob) Shipp Alabama Artificial Reef Zone.
The project was intended to provide both marine habitat and a major new destination for scuba divers and anglers.
The location was deliberately chosen close to two of Alabama’s established wreck diving sites, the 271-foot LuLu and 250-foot New Venture. The Argosy VI sits within approximately 7.5 miles of those wrecks, effectively creating a cluster of three substantial artificial reef sites.
Following its sinking, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources confirmed that the vessel had settled at the designated reef site approximately 23 miles south of Orange Beach.
Marine Resources officials described the deployment at the time as the latest major addition to Alabama’s artificial reef programme.
Structural Changes Within Weeks
The newly documented condition of the wreck represents a significant change from its appearance immediately following deployment.
Underwater photographer and scuba instructor Lila Harris reportedly documented the vessel during its first week underwater and returned approximately five weeks later. Images from the later dive showed fractures and openings across areas that had previously presented as a relatively flat upper structure.
At this stage, however, the full extent of the changes has not been independently established by the state’s own underwater inspection.
Neither has Alabama issued an official determination that the Argosy VI is unsafe to dive.
That distinction is important for divers considering visiting the wreck. Until the Marine Resources Division completes its assessment, reports of structural damage should not automatically be interpreted as evidence that the entire site is unstable or closed to recreational diving.
What Caused the Damage?
The cause is also currently unknown.
There has been speculation that recent weather conditions in the Gulf may have contributed to the changes, but no official finding has established a connection.
The Argosy VI was prepared specifically for artificial reef deployment before sinking. Potentially environmentally harmful materials and hydrocarbons were removed, while openings were created within the structure as part of preparations for its controlled descent.
State officials reported immediately after the July 1 deployment that the vessel had settled as engineered.
Determining how the structure has responded to almost two months in the marine environment will therefore be one of the important questions facing the state’s inspection team.
Marine Life Already Moving In
While the structural changes are attracting attention, another transformation is taking place around the Argosy VI.
Divers visiting the site have reported rapidly increasing numbers of fish around the vessel, an early indication that the enormous structure is beginning to fulfil its intended role as marine habitat.
That process was anticipated before the vessel was sunk.
Alabama Marine Resources Fisheries Section Supervisor Craig Newton previously explained that fish would likely begin appearing around the wreck within weeks, although development of a mature reef ecosystem involving organisms such as corals and bryozoans would take considerably longer.
For Alabama divers, the Argosy VI remains a particularly significant addition to the state’s offshore diving landscape.
What happens next will depend on what state divers find when they examine the wreck themselves.
Until that inspection has been completed, the most important questions remain unanswered: how extensive is the structural damage, does it present any additional risk to divers, and what caused such substantial changes so soon after deployment?
