Grand Cayman is preparing to welcome divers, snorkellers and ocean enthusiasts for one of the Caribbean’s most successful charity diving events, with the 12th annual PADI Women’s Dive Day aiming to raise even more money for the Cayman Islands Breast Cancer Foundation.
The event will take place on Saturday, 18 July, at Divetech’s Cobalt Coast facility in West Bay, continuing a tradition that has grown from a small celebration of women in diving into one of the Cayman Islands’ best-known community fundraising events.
Since partnering with the Cayman Islands Breast Cancer Foundation in 2018, the annual event has raised more than US$60,000, helping fund awareness, diagnosis, treatment, counselling and financial support for people affected by breast cancer across the islands.
The day welcomes far more than just women. Certified divers, snorkellers, families and supporters of all ages and genders are encouraged to take part while supporting a worthwhile cause.
Among the most anticipated attractions is the popular underwater scavenger hunt, where brightly coloured pink rocks are hidden around the dive site, each linked to donated prizes from local businesses. Returning by popular demand is the Ice Bucket Plunge challenge, alongside a charity raffle featuring hundreds of prizes.
A minimum donation includes tanks, weights and entry into the underwater scavenger hunt, with all proceeds going directly to the Cayman Islands Breast Cancer Foundation.
The event forms part of the global PADI Women’s Dive Day, an initiative launched in 2015 to encourage greater participation in diving while celebrating the achievements of women across the diving community. Today it has become one of the largest annual celebrations in recreational diving, with hundreds of events taking place around the world.
Divetech has been involved since the inaugural PADI Women’s Dive Day and has steadily expanded its Cayman event into a major community fundraiser. Previous editions have included world-record underwater human chains, conservation activities and increasingly ambitious fundraising targets, attracting hundreds of participants each year.
Organisers say everyone is welcome, whether diving, snorkelling or simply cheering from shore, with the goal of making this year’s fundraiser the biggest yet.
