A diver was successfully resuscitated after suffering a medical emergency at Malta’s renowned Ċirkewwa dive site on Monday, according to local reports.
The incident occurred at the popular shore-diving location on Malta’s northwest coast, one of the busiest and most frequently visited dive sites in the Mediterranean.
Reports indicate that fellow divers assisted the individual back to shore after the emergency unfolded. Two doctors who were reportedly present at the scene immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) efforts before emergency medical personnel arrived.
The diver is understood to have regained a pulse before being transferred by ambulance to Mater Dei Hospital for further treatment.
Authorities were notified of the incident and an investigation is ongoing.
At the time of writing, no details have been released regarding the diver’s identity, nationality, age, or current medical condition. Officials have also not disclosed the nature of the medical episode or whether it was directly related to diving activities.
Ċirkewwa is widely regarded as one of Malta’s premier diving destinations, attracting recreational and technical divers throughout the year. The site provides access to several well-known underwater attractions, including the P29 patrol boat wreck and the MV Rozi tugboat wreck.
While diving incidents at the site occasionally make headlines due to its popularity, successful resuscitations following serious medical emergencies are comparatively uncommon and highlight the importance of rapid intervention by trained responders and bystanders.
