A 73-year-old Ventura County man has died following a diving incident off California’s Anacapa Island, according to local authorities.
According to a report in the Ventura County Star, emergency services were alerted to the incident at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday after a diver was reported unconscious in the water near the island.
The diver was brought aboard a vessel where CPR was initiated before emergency responders arrived. Despite those efforts, the man was pronounced dead.
The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as a 73-year-old resident of Ventura County. His name has not been publicly released.
Authorities have not yet disclosed what caused the diver to lose consciousness, and the circumstances leading up to the incident remain under investigation.
Anacapa Island, located within California’s Channel Islands National Park, is one of the state’s best-known diving destinations. The island’s kelp forests, rocky reefs, and abundant marine life attract recreational divers throughout the year, with operators regularly running day trips from Ventura Harbor and nearby coastal communities.
While the waters surrounding the Channel Islands are widely regarded as some of California’s premier diving locations, conditions can vary significantly. Cold water, currents, surge, and the physical demands of offshore diving can present challenges even for experienced divers.
At the time of publication, authorities had not released information regarding the diver’s experience level, the type of diving being conducted, the vessel involved, or whether any underlying medical issues may have contributed to the incident.
The Scuba News was unable to locate additional official statements from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, Coast Guard, or local dive operators beyond the initial report. No eyewitness accounts had been publicly shared at the time of writing.
The incident remains under investigation.
