A 73-year-old woman has died following an apparent medical emergency during a scuba dive off Kewalo Basin in Honolulu, according to Hawaii emergency officials. The incident unfolded Sunday morning after the diver became unresponsive aboard a dive vessel returning to shore.
The Honolulu Ocean Safety Department said lifeguards responded at approximately 8:24 a.m. local time after receiving reports of an unresponsive scuba diver offshore of Kewalo Basin, one of Oahu’s best-known recreational boating and diving areas. Emergency responders boarded the vessel and immediately began providing CPR as the boat made its way back toward the harbour.
When the vessel arrived at the Kewalo Basin fuel dock, patient care was transferred to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services personnel. The woman was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where she was later pronounced dead.
Police said the diver appeared to have suffered a medical emergency while scuba diving and confirmed that no foul play or suspicious circumstances were observed. Authorities have not released the diver’s identity, nor have they provided details about the dive profile, conditions, experience level, or the operator involved.
At this stage, the incident appears to be medically related rather than linked to equipment failure or environmental conditions. No additional official statements have been released beyond the initial reports from Honolulu Ocean Safety and EMS.
While fatal scuba incidents often attract immediate speculation online, diving medicine experts have long noted that sudden medical events remain one of the leading causes of deaths among older recreational divers, even during otherwise routine dives. The exact cause of death in this case has not yet been confirmed.
The incident comes during an unusually active period for global diving fatality reporting, with several separate scuba-related deaths reported internationally in recent days, including multiple incidents in Italy and the Maldives. However, there is currently no indication that the Hawaii incident was connected to anything beyond an isolated medical emergency.
The Scuba News will continue monitoring for any further updates from Honolulu authorities or local investigators.
