A diver has gone missing at a well-known high-risk dive site near Athens, prompting an ongoing search operation in challenging conditions.
According to reports in Protothema and Greek City Times, a 34-year-old diver disappeared on March 22 while diving at Limanakia, Vouliagmeni, a coastal area on the Athenian Riviera.
The diver entered a submerged vertical shaft known locally as the “Devil’s Well,” a confined underwater feature reaching depths of around 30 metres. He was diving with a partner, who surfaced and alerted authorities when the diver failed to return.
Search and rescue teams, including the Hellenic Coast Guard and specialist divers, were deployed to the site. Operations are being complicated by the structure of the shaft, restricted access, and water movement within the formation.
At the time of writing, the diver has not been located.
Hazardous Dive Site
The “Devil’s Well” is known within the local diving community as a hazardous site due to its vertical entry, confined space, and overhead environment. Conditions can deteriorate quickly, particularly for divers without appropriate cave training and equipment.
Incidents at Limanakia have been reported previously, reinforcing its reputation as a site requiring caution.

No official statement has yet been released detailing the diver’s experience level or the circumstances leading up to the dive.
