Two divers were hospitalised following a diving accident at Werbellinsee near Joachimsthal, after both were forced to make an emergency ascent from depth, according to local reports.
The incident occurred during a dive in the lake, where the pair surfaced rapidly from an estimated depth of around 30 metres. Emergency services were alerted immediately, with a large-scale response that included ambulance crews, local fire services and two rescue helicopters.
One diver, a 49-year-old woman, was reported to be in a serious condition and was transferred to a hyperbaric chamber for specialist treatment. The second diver also required medical attention, though no further details about their condition have been released.
Authorities have not yet confirmed what caused the emergency ascent, and there has been no official statement from police or medical services outlining contributing factors or the sequence of events underwater. Water temperature and depth are understood to have been significant considerations in the response, given the lake’s conditions at this time of year.
Werbellinsee is a known inland diving location in the Brandenburg region, attracting experienced divers due to its depth and cold-water environment. As with many freshwater sites, dives can involve limited visibility and demanding conditions, particularly outside the summer season.
At present, information remains limited, and the incident appears to be based solely on local reporting. Further updates are expected should authorities release additional details or findings.
The Scuba News will continue to monitor the situation and report confirmed information as it becomes available.
