The family of diver Thomas “Tim” Kenny has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs of legal representation at his upcoming inquest, following his unexpected death while scuba diving earlier this year.
The fundraiser, titled “Help Us Seek Answers for Our Dad’s Diving Accident,” appears to have been launched by Joanne Kenny. It describes how the family is petitioning for proper legal representation at the inquest, and raises a host of concerns about the dive, safety procedures, and the handling of evidence. The campaign is live, with a modest target of approximately £1,100.
According to the GoFundMe page, Thomas Kenny had returned to diving after a long absence of nearly thirty years. On his first dive back, the account says his weight belt came loose at a wreck site and he felt unwell. On a subsequent dive, the family cite dive-computer data showing “rapid descent and a fast ascent … then second rapid descent … second rapid ascent.” They also allege the Mayday call was delayed by over an hour, and that they have yet to receive full dive-computer logs, police reports or witness statements.
The family says only brief summaries have been provided by the coroner and that they need legal assistance to ensure their father’s death is fully and transparently investigated.
According to reports from Merseyside Police and ITV News, Thomas “Tim” Kenny, 65, from Netherton, died while scuba diving off the coast of New Brighton in Liverpool Bay on 7 May 2025. Emergency services were alerted by HM Coastguard at around 6:40 pm after a diver was found unresponsive near the Burbo Wind Farm. Police later confirmed that the death was being treated as unexplained while investigations continued, and the family issued a heartfelt tribute describing Mr Kenny as a kind and generous man who was deeply loved by those who knew him.
