Statistics show that running out of air is one of the most common causes of fatalities in SCUBA diving. This begs the question: why do divers fail to manage a scenario for which we’ve all been trained?
While the answer could apply to many other poorly performed skills, and even to the fundamental skill of preventing such situations, the fact remains that sharing gas could be a true lottery. Likely second only to buoyancy, this is one of the most complex skills in diving.
The huge number of available options, combined with the fact that success doesn’t depend on us alone but is shared with our buddy, makes this skill a true lottery. Given the prize divers stand to win—or lose—it’s clear that this is a lottery we must win.
Winning this lottery should be not a game of luck.
But how can divers be sure to win? Is it even possible?
HERE’s where we discuss options to win, and even a few cheats to improve divers’ odds.
