Few dive sites in the world rival the historical significance and underwater spectacle of the SS Thistlegorm. Nestled in the depths of the Egyptian Red Sea, this WWII-era wreck continues to captivate divers with its preserved cargo and thriving marine life.

    A Voyage Through History

Built in 1940, the SS Thistlegorm embarked on a critical supply mission during the Second World War, loaded with everything from military equipment to medical supplies. Tragically, in 1941, German bombers struck the ship, sending it to its final resting place. Today, it serves as both an underwater museum and an artificial reef.

    Why It’s a Bucket-List Dive

Divers are drawn to the Thistlegorm for two key reasons: its cargo and its atmosphere. Exploring the holds feels like stepping into a time capsule — trucks still lined up for delivery, motorcycles neatly stacked, and scattered crates of rifles. Meanwhile, colorful corals, trevally, and moray eels have made this historic wreck their home, blending history with vibrant marine life.

    Exploring the Wreck

The SS Thistlegorm spans an impressive 128 meters, split into two primary sections. The bow remains largely intact, with its anchor chains still visible, while the stern, torn apart by explosions, showcases massive anti-aircraft guns and the ship’s propeller — a favorite photo spot for divers.

    When to Dive

While accessible year-round, the ideal seasons for diving the Thistlegorm are autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) when visibility is at its peak and currents are calmer.
