Lana Smithson made her first dive in Newfoundland at Ship Cove. (July 22, 2022) Ship Cove is at the northernmost tip of the Great Northern Peninsula. She could have been the first person to dive here, according to the neighbours. Lana discovered that there was a lot to see and explore beneath the surface.

In the 2016 Census of Population, Ship Cove had a population of 75 people living in 39 of its 50 private dwellings, according to Statistics Canada. Ship Cove, once a fishing community, has seen its population plummet as older residents have passed and younger residents have moved on to find work elsewhere.

Dive Report

Clear water and no current. Lots of sealife. The sculpins and flounders followed me around like little puppies. A huge school of hundreds of mackerels swirled around me (at a distance) for most of the dive. Water temp 46-49 degrees. 66 minutes. 19 ft depth.
