Be a part of the development of a uniquely Canadian preservative on ocean literacy
Marine Institute of Memorial University, St. John’s, Newfoundland: July 13-15, 2018
All hands are invited on deck in Newfoundland this summer to join CaNOE in navigating a course for ocean literacy in Canada. Our aim is to pull together to develop our uniquely Canadian perspective on what it means to be ocean literate and help shape a national ocean literacy strategy.
Presentations and discussions will explore four sub-themes:
Ocean literacy and culture
Ocean literacy and education and communication
Ocean literacy and science and technology
Ocean literacy and stewardship and conservation
End of day workshop sessions will address specific questions to help identify local actions that align with a “roadmap” that is being developed to create an ocean literacy strategy for Canada. One question will focus on the essential ocean science literacy principles, already adopted by the US and the EU (in adapted form).
Over the three days, we will celebrate and learn from successful efforts in ocean education across the country, including indigenous experiences, and build a resources map to share best practices!
Outcomes include a position document describing what ocean literacy means in Canada and common messaging that will be incorporated into a Canadian brochure on ocean literacy with translation into both official languages and as many Indigenous languages as possible.
We are excited to overlap our symposium with a meeting of the international AORA (Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance) OL Working Group and the 2018 Coastal Zone Canada Conference, and look forward to building synergies and relationships!
