Local artist Tiana Pitman is a huge lover of her local community and coastal environment and is always keen to convey that in her craft. Working mainly with paint, sculpture and through various other mixed media both locally and internationally, Tiana has sold prints and originals as far as Mexico and America. She is a firm believer in exploring her roots and keeping childhood traditions of beach combing, re using and recycling found materials and investigating the art of thrift alive.
Southsea beach and other surrounding local coastline bears found memories for Tiana who’s motivation and drive to become a professional artist spiralled from an inspirational home town. Tiana told us, ‘The beach is a place I have always gone to, to unwind and recollect my thoughts, a place to blow away the cobwebs and reset. At my most calm and relaxed comes my most strongest enthusiasm to be creative and that is why I always spend hours of my time beach roaming. Beach trinkets have always been a pleasure of mine and in a city like ours hold a strong sense of identity as nautical minded folk.’
Promoting the protection and welfare of coastline in Portsmouth Tiana is a huge advocate of beach cleaning and investing her time into looking after her local environment. The shells she finds are often one’s left on benches along the sea front or in little mounds in seafront carparks. They are people’s collections that have been gathered and abandoned or left broken. Picking them up and taking them back to the beach or using them as additions to pieces of her work pull all of her passions together.
