A 34-year-old diver was found dead following an extensive overnight search operation off Taiwan’s Xiaoliuqiu Island, one of the country’s most popular diving destinations.
According to Taiwanese media reports, the diver, identified only by his surname Tsai, entered the water near the Houshi Fringing Reefs area but failed to return as expected. Concerned relatives alerted authorities, triggering a multi-agency search effort involving Coast Guard personnel, police, firefighters, volunteer rescue organizations, fellow divers, friends and family members.
The search continued through the evening and into the early hours of the following morning. Reports indicate the diver was eventually located approximately 300 metres offshore after several hours of searching. He was recovered from the water and transported to Dafu Fishing Port, where authorities confirmed the fatal outcome.
Local reports state that family members were involved in the search effort and remained at the scene throughout the operation.
Authorities have not yet released details regarding the cause of death, and an investigation remains ongoing.
Xiaoliuqiu: One of Taiwan’s Premier Dive Destinations
The incident occurred off Xiaoliuqiu (Little Liuqiu), a small coral island located off Taiwan’s southwest coast in Pingtung County. The island has become one of Taiwan’s best-known diving destinations and is particularly famous for its resident population of green sea turtles, warm water temperatures and year-round diving opportunities. The island is often regarded as one of the most accessible dive destinations in Taiwan and attracts both local and international divers throughout the year.
The Houshi Fringing Reefs area is among several coastal dive sites that have helped establish Xiaoliuqiu’s reputation as a major centre for recreational diving in Taiwan.
Investigation Continuing
At the time of publication, officials have not disclosed whether medical factors, environmental conditions, equipment issues or other circumstances may have contributed to the incident.
As with many diving fatalities, investigators will likely examine the diver’s equipment, experience level, dive profile and environmental conditions before determining a cause.
The Scuba News will continue to monitor developments and provide updates if additional information becomes available.
