A tourist from Canada has died following a night diving incident near the Rif area of Otrobanda, Curaçao, according to multiple local reports and police information released on the island.
The incident reportedly took place at around 7:30pm during a guided night dive near the popular waterfront area close to Rif Fort and the cruise terminal. According to local radio outlet Paradise FM Curaçao, the diver experienced breathing difficulties underwater while diving with a local dive school.
Fellow divers managed to bring the man back to shore unconscious, where CPR was immediately started before emergency medical teams arrived on scene. The diver was transported in critical condition to Curaçao Medical Center but later died from his injuries.
Local news outlet Curaçao.nu also reported the incident, confirming that police and forensic investigators have opened an investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the fatality.
Authorities have reportedly seized the diver’s scuba equipment and cylinder as part of the ongoing investigation. At the time of writing, officials have not publicly confirmed the diver’s identity.
Night diving is a popular activity throughout Curaçao, particularly around the island’s accessible shore diving sites and reef systems surrounding Willemstad. While considered safe when conducted within training and certification limits, night dives can present additional challenges including reduced visibility, navigation difficulties, stress responses, and delayed recognition of equipment problems.
As with all fatal diving incidents, investigators will likely examine multiple factors including equipment function, environmental conditions, diver experience, medical history, and emergency response timelines before determining an official cause.
The incident serves as another reminder of the importance of dive planning, buddy awareness, proper equipment checks, and conservative diving practices, particularly during night operations.
