For a limited time, shark conservation efforts are getting a rare boost, and it’s one that divers, ocean lovers, and citizen scientists should not ignore.
From April 22 to April 29, every donation made to the Great Eggcase Hunt through the Shark Trust will be matched pound for pound. That means a £10 contribution instantly becomes £20, and £100 becomes £200, doubling the impact at a moment when shark conservation needs it most.
This initiative is part of the Big Give Earth Raise campaign, a major UK environmental fundraising effort designed to accelerate real-world conservation outcomes.
Why This Matters Now
The Great Eggcase Hunt is not just another awareness campaign. It is one of the most successful marine citizen science projects in the world, with over half a million eggcase records already submitted.
Each of those records represents a small but critical piece of a much larger puzzle, helping researchers understand where sharks and skates reproduce, and which habitats need urgent protection.
But here’s the problem. Much of that data remains under-analysed.
Without deeper investigation, key patterns tied to seasons, ocean conditions, and habitat preferences risk being missed entirely. These are the insights that could define future marine protection zones and conservation strategies.
This funding push is designed to unlock that potential.
The Hidden World of Shark Nurseries
Nearly half of all sharks, skates, and chimaeras lay eggs. These eggcases, often found washed ashore or hidden underwater, offer rare insight into breeding grounds.
Yet fewer than 1% of recorded eggcases come from underwater observations, where embryos are still developing.
For divers, this is where things become especially important.
Those underwater encounters connect the dots between coastal findings and the actual nursery habitats where life begins. Without them, conservation efforts remain incomplete.
The Shark Trust is now actively calling on divers to play a bigger role, turning everyday dives into meaningful contributions to science.
More Than Conservation, A Gateway to Connection
Beyond the data, the Great Eggcase Hunt delivers something equally valuable, connection.
It introduces people to marine life in a tangible way, encourages time spent outdoors, supports mental wellbeing, and provides a simple, family-friendly way to engage with ocean conservation.
This combination of science, accessibility, and human impact is what has allowed the project to thrive for more than two decades.
A Rare Opportunity to Double Your Impact
Matched funding campaigns are not common, and they do not last long.
For one week only, every donation carries twice the weight. That means faster progress, deeper analysis, and a stronger foundation for protecting vulnerable shark and skate species worldwide.
In conservation, timing matters. And right now, this is one of those moments where action goes further than usual.
