A honeymoon diving trip in the Maldives has turned into a life-threatening emergency after a Spanish tourist suffered catastrophic injuries in a shark attack near Kooddoo in Gaafu Alif Atoll.
The incident is reported to have occurred on April 12, 2026, during a snorkelling excursion in waters known to host large numbers of reef and pelagic sharks. According to local reporting from Edition.mv, the diver sustained severe trauma to his leg and was initially treated on the island before being transferred to a hospital in Malé.
His injuries were so extensive that doctors were forced to amputate part of his leg. He remains in critical condition.
Further details emerging through Spanish media, including coverage cited by The Inertia, indicate the victim is a 31-year-old man from Alicante who had been travelling with his wife on their honeymoon. Reports suggest the group entered the water near a fish processing area, a factor that may have influenced shark activity, although this has not been officially confirmed.
Authorities in the Maldives have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. It remains unclear whether environmental factors, human activity, or procedural lapses played a role.
A Rare but Serious Reminder
While shark encounters are relatively common in the Maldives, attacks on humans remain extremely rare. The country is widely regarded as one of the world’s safest destinations for shark diving, with thousands of interactions taking place each year without incident.
However, this event underscores a critical point for divers and snorkellers. Conditions such as reduced visibility, proximity to fishing or fish processing activity, and unmanaged entry points can increase risk, even in destinations with strong safety records.
As more details emerge, the diving community will be watching closely, not only for clarity on what happened, but for any lessons that can help prevent similar incidents in the future.
What Happens Next
With the victim still in intensive care, the immediate focus remains on his recovery. At the same time, the investigation may provide further insight into site management, briefing protocols, and environmental conditions at the time of the attack.
